HORIZON LINES
Horizon Lines is the nation's leading Jones Act container shipping and logistics company. It operates a fleet of 16 vessels and 21,700 cargo containers, handling 37 percent of container shipments between the U.S. mainland and Alaska, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Guam. Its specialized logistics services include trucking for West Coast customers. The Jones Act, enacted in the 1920s, requires that maritime trade between U.S. ports be conducted by American-owned and incorporated companies that use ships built and registered in the U.S., with predominantly U.S. crews. Because Coast Guard and Jones Act regulations also set strict safety and service standards that most shipping companies cannot meet, only a few serve these Jones Act markets.
